The President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, is expected in Ghana on Sunday, November 2, 2025, for a three-day state visit aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade, technology, education, and development.
Invited by President John Dramani Mahama, the visit will include official engagements in Accra and Kumasi, reflecting Germany’s deepening partnership with Ghanaian institutions in science and innovation.
A key highlight of the visit will be President Steinmeier’s engagement with the Vice-Chancellor, staff, and alumni of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). The meeting underscores the central role KNUST plays in fostering German–Ghanaian collaboration in research, higher education, and sustainable development.
KNUST and its research units, including the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research (KCCR), have long partnered with German universities and institutions on projects spanning infectious disease research, renewable energy, environmental sustainability, and engineering innovation. The German President’s visit is expected to reaffirm these ties and explore new areas of cooperation in digitalisation and applied sciences.
According to the official schedule, President Steinmeier will be accorded a full military Guard of Honour at the Jubilee House in Accra on Monday, November 3. The two Heads of State will hold bilateral talks followed by a State Luncheon.
He will also tour the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, where he will lay a wreath in honour of Ghana’s first President. Later, he will meet young Ghanaian technology innovators before attending a reception at the German Ambassador’s residence.
In Kumasi, the German leader will perform a sod-cutting ceremony at the Kumasi Technical Institute and pay a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace, before proceeding to KNUST.
In a statement issued by the Government, Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu described the visit as “a reaffirmation of the strong and enduring partnership between Ghana and Germany.”
The engagements at KNUST are anticipated to reinforce the University’s international profile and open new frontiers in academic exchange, applied research, and innovation funding with German institutions.
President Steinmeier departs Ghana on the evening of Tuesday, November 4, 2025.
